Occupancy Measurement Occupancy sensors are commonly used in building control systems to operate lighting and room air conditioning equipment. Sensors turn lights and air conditioning equipment off (or to reduced levels) when no occupants are detected. This is done to minimize energy consumption. Occupancy sensors may be designed to detect motion or differences in background infrared radiation and the radiation emitted from a human occupant. Many occupancy sensors used for lighting also incorporate photocells or other light sensitive devices to reduce lighting when ambient light is sufficient.
